Custom Aerosol Paints
Producers of aerosol paints typically deal with color palettes in the thousands. They support almost all the automotive and industrial colors which have been produced. The batch sizes can be a 4 pack of aerosol cans to a large run of a thousand cans of a color. The colors are formulated, agitated, filtered and then a special machine loads the batch into the aerosol cans.
Producers of fasteners are typically required to paint the fastener heads to match the color palettes of metal siding, roofing, decking and other related construction applications. The paint is typically a solvent-borne 2 part epoxy either sprayed on the fastener or in some cases the fastener is dipped into the paint.
A customer in heavy truck vehicle production, currently has several “manual cut-in” zones which precede the robotic Painting Zones. In the manual zones, operators leave the booth to get the resin color and mix it with the appropriate catalyst for the 3:1 required ratio, pour it into their cup guns, return to the spray booth and spray the catalyzed paint.
Heavy truck manufacturers support custom fleet and carrier colors and allow a buyer to select from the entire palette of available colors from the paint supplier. In addition, many trucks are multi-tone and can have up to 3 custom colors per truck. Paint for the trucks are formulated into 5 or six gallon pails and then delivered to the paint booth(s) where they are loaded into the robots for processing.
A customer is custom tinting 5 gallon pails of silicone sealant for the construction industry. The formulas consist of a white silicone base, a highly thixotropic material with viscosity at 1,000,000 centipoise. The base white which is approximately 90% or more of each pail has concentrated colorants of 3,000,000 centipoise added in small amounts to the pail to finish the color formula. The customer hopes to both automate the existing manual process, and increase the production rate by a magnitude of 3.
